Havanese are usually AMAZING dogs and this post will tell you more about them!
ADAPTABILITY
Havanese can generally live in most climates and buildings. They can live in any house or apartment as long as they get play time and walks. My Havanese Sadie is super sensitive with her ears and toes because I didn’t get her used to me touching them when she was a puppy. If you are a first-time dog owner like me then Havanese are a great choice of dog.
FRIENDLINESS
Havanese are typically super friendly dogs. They will willingly sit on your lap, kiss you, let you snuggle them and are affectionate with the whole family. They are also normally okay with other dogs. Havanese are friendly towards strangers and will lick and jump up on them. However, Sadie is a rare exception to the average Havanese. Sadie will not willingly sit on my lap, she sometimes growls when I try to pet her, you can tell she hates my mom, she barks at other dogs and she is super shy around strangers.
HEALTH/GROOMING
Havanese don’t shed at all, which is amazing. They are also hypoallergenic so that they don’t smell and they do not contain allergens in their hair so someone who is usually allergic to dogs probably won’t have a problem with Havanese! A Havanese’s hair will grow to become really long so you have to brush it multiple times a day or get them shaved. Havanese health is not typically the best. They can easily get eye and teeth problems. To avoid this brush your dog’s teeth every day and put eye drops in their eyes. Havanese are also toy breed dogs, which means they are very small and weigh between 9 and 15 pounds. Sadie weighs 14 pounds but is a healthy weight.
TRAINABILITY
Havanese are typically easy to train and you can teach them to do a variety of tricks. This breed of dog is very intelligent. If you get a dog like Sadie they will be so smart that they know what you want them to do but they will choose not to do it. Havanese have a small tendency to mouth and bite. If they do you should make a high-pitched noise and they will most likely stop. Havanese have a large tendency to bark just because they are a small breed of dog. This can easily be stopped with proper training. They have an even temperament and are small which helps with training. Havanese are excitable dogs and will need a walk every day. This walk should be at least fifteen minutes long. If you introduce longer walks slowly then your Havanese can come with you farther distances. Sadie has gone with me on 5km hikes.
